About North Lincolnshire Council

North Lincolnshire Council is one of several "Unitary Authorities" created in 1996 from the former Humberside County Council. With 66 primary, junior and infant schools, 13 secondary schools and 2 special schools it is a small and unique LA, led by the Service Director, David Lea. North Lincolnshire became a Beacon Authority for Raising Attainment in Education in 2001 and followed it up with a further Beacon Award for Transition in Education in 2002, something of which it is justifiably proud. The LA also received a Grade 1 Ofsted as well as producing a Grade 1 Development Plan. North Lincolnshire supports its schools, heads, teachers and governors not only through the quality of its services but also through the commitment of its advisers and advisory officers.

Every school in the LA is linked to a "Partnership Adviser" who regularly visits the school, supporting processes such as school target-setting, implementing new strategies and school development planning. Every newly-qualified teacher in the LA is visited by their school’s Partnership Adviser in their Induction year.

Other services include:

  • Special Educational Needs Teaching Team– known as "SENTT"
  • Behavioural Support Service – including primary and secondary Pupil Referral Units as well as outreach support
  • Diversity Service (including Bilingual Support and Traveller Education)
  • Music Support Service
  • Portage – home-based education for pre-school children with special educational needs

LEA support for NQT Induction

To support schools and newly-qualified teachers in the Induction process during the first statutory year of Induction, the LA will provide:

  • information, support materials and training for those with responsibility for the induction process;
    training for NQTs;
  • lesson observation and feedback to NQTs in partnership with Induction Tutors and continued monitoring where appropriate.

The programme of support for Induction Tutors and NQTS is planned and run in partnership with Hull University. It specifically focuses on the issues raised by the National Standards for Induction and the procedures required as part of the Induction process.

LEA Advisory Support

LA phase and subject advisers will visit each school during the Autumn Term to support NQT induction. Subject advisers will visit NQTs in secondary schools. Partnership advisers, or other primary advisers, will visit NQTs in primary schools. Relevant advisers will contact schools with NQTs to make arrangements.

The focus will be a lesson observation followed by feedback and a progress discussion with the NQT. We suggest that, where possible, the lesson observation and feedback should be jointly carried out by the adviser and the NQT's Induction Tutor. This has proved a very positive and beneficial experience in the last year and an excellent way of sharing good practice.

Advisers will record the observation and details of the visit on an NQTI form, copies of which will be sent to the head teacher and to the NQT.

Where concerns about the Induction process are identified by any of the parties concerned, the LA will continue to monitor closely.

The visit is offered to schools as:

  • part of the LA's statutory role in quality assurance for the Induction of NQTs;
  • a way of gaining information about the progress of NQTs to inform the LA's given role of making decisions on NQTs' success in meeting the statutory requirements for Induction;
  • a source of support for NQTs, Induction Tutors and head teachers.

If schools would prefer not to take up this support they should inform the LA by writing to: Gill Ayre, Education Adviser (NQT Induction) at Hewson House, Brigg.
